celebra\u00adting its fiftieth anniversary\u2014a suitable oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity to (re)discover the photo\u00adgra\u00adphic work of one of the most interes\u00adting German photo\u00adgraphers, who developed his own unique photo\u00adgra\u00adphic language with his elegant, high-contrast style. To honor the occasion, three insti\u00adtu\u00adtions in Wolfsburg, including the Kunst\u00admu\u00adseum, are presen\u00adting the works of the photographer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>In a variety of events from September through November 2021, the photo\u00adgraph will be examined from different perspec\u00adtives together with partner insti\u00adtu\u00adtions under the title <em>KRAFTWERK <\/em>(<em>POWER PLANT) by Heinrich Heiders\u00adberger \u2013 A Photo\u00adgra\u00adphic Icon Turns 50<\/em>. The Kunst\u00admu\u00adseum Wolfsburg is presen\u00adting an exhibi\u00adtion on the iconic image of the <em>Kraftwerk der Volks\u00adwagen AG (Volks\u00adwagen Power Plant)<\/em> together with twenty-two other photo\u00adgraphs under the title <em>Kraftwerk Heiders\u00adberger<\/em> <em>(Power Plant Heiders\u00adberger)<\/em>, the St\u00e4dti\u00adsche Galerie Wolfsburg delves into the identity-forming moment of his images, and the Institut Heiders\u00adberger is offering a look behind the scenes in archive tours in the former studio in Wolfsburg Castle, thus providing an overview of his oeuvre. The highlight of the events will be a podium discus\u00adsion on November 4 in the Autostadt Wolfsburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heinrich Heiders\u00adberger achieved fame with his archi\u00adtec\u00adtural photo\u00adgraphy; he also worked for the German weekly magazine <em>Stern<\/em>, among other publi\u00adca\u00adtions, and throughout his life wove surrea\u00adlist influ\u00adences into his photo\u00adgraphs. Parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly in the carefully arranged and expres\u00adsive black-and-white photo\u00adgraphs, an enigmatic humor can be discerned. Through its stylistic and thematic diversity, Heidersberger\u2019s work reflects the most important lines of develo\u00adp\u00adment in twentieth-century German history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Heinrich Heiders\u00adberger (1906\u20132006) photo\u00adgra\u00adphed the power plant of Volks\u00adwagen AG in November 1971 for an exhibi\u00adtion at the Haus Wolfsburg in conjunc\u00adtion with the 1972 Munich Olympics, he created an image that crowned his success as an archi\u00adtec\u00adtural photo\u00adgra\u00adpher. \u201cIn it, the various influ\u00adences he was exposed to throughout his artistic life converge,\u201d explains Bernd Rodrian, Director of the Institut Heidersberger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heiders\u00adberger was among the leading photo\u00adgraphers of the modernist era and is consi\u00addered one of the key figures of abstract photo\u00adgraphy in the 1950s. He was affiliated with the New Objec\u00adti\u00advity movement and made a name for himself as an outstan\u00adding experi\u00admental photo\u00adgra\u00adpher. A perfec\u00adtio\u00adnist, Heiders\u00adberger also gained notoriety for his experi\u00adments with light, which had a signi\u00adfi\u00adcant impact on his work. As a repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtive of genera\u00adtive photo\u00adgraphy, which used technical aids outside the camera to influence the image, he contri\u00adbuted to expanding the bounda\u00adries of the medium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>The Photo\u00adgra\u00adphic Icon <em>Kraftwerk <\/em>(<em>Power Plant<\/em><\/strong><\/strong>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A rare wind from the east, a cool, clear autumn morning, the shifting of the vanishing point to the left half of the image, the opposite bank parallel to the horizontal\u2014technique, timing, and weather condi\u00adtions of the photo were cleverly chosen. The view under the bridge magically draws the viewer into the deserted scene. While color filters provided a deep dark sky and snow-white steam, the long exposure time virtually froze the water surface. According to Andreas Beitin, Director of the Kunst\u00admu\u00adseum Wolfsburg, utopia and dystopia seem to converge in this unreal yet impres\u00adsive image. \u201cWhile at the time of its creation the picture stood for a new awakening, the economic miracle, and pride in what had been achieved, in later years the oil price crisis, the environ\u00adment, and \u2018limits to growth\u2019 were added. It thus also makes Germany\u2019s trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion visible,\u201d explains Benjamin Heiders\u00adberger, Managing Director of the Institut Heidersberger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heiders\u00adberger was a European par excel\u00adlence. Born in Ingol\u00adstadt in 1906, he grew up in Linz, Austria, and spent part of his childhood in Denmark. In Graz, he studied archi\u00adtec\u00adture and eventually turned to painting. In the late 1920s, he was drawn to the Paris bohemian scene. Inspired by the Surrea\u00adlism of the Parisian avant-garde around Giorgio de Chirico and Fernand L\u00e9ger, he enrolled in the latter\u2019s Acad\u00e9mie Moderne, where he turned to the medium of photo\u00adgraphy. From Surrea\u00adlism, he retained the mischie\u00advous play with image details and the special choice of perspec\u00adtive. After World War II, he became one of the most sought-after archi\u00adtec\u00adtural photo\u00adgraphers in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Stern, he set off on journeys around the globe and also shot journa\u00adlistic photo\u00adgraphs in color. In 1961, after working in Salzgitter and Braun\u00adschweig, he was invited by the City of Wolfsburg, where he lived and worked until his death in 2006. In 1963, his photos for the book Wolfsburg \u2013 Bilder einer jungen Stadt (Images of a Young City) defined the self-image of the city, which was just twenty-five years young, and its inhabi\u00adtants. He remained dedicated to the end, committed to dealing with Wolfsburg\u2019s history and the legacy of forced labor. Heidersberger\u2019s oeuvre comprises appro\u00adxi\u00admately 130,000 images from the fields of archi\u00adtec\u00adture, reportage, industry, and adver\u00adti\u00adsing, as well as algorithmic experi\u00adments.
