Time and again, he called for art and life to be linked; and indeed, his works and their varia\u00adtions have visually invaded countless areas of life. Based on works from his most important creative period, the exhibi\u00adtion offers an insight into the multi\u00adfa\u00adceted explo\u00adra\u00adtion of Piet Mondrian\u2019s main neoplastic work through around 150 artworks and objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Like hardly anyone else, Piet Mondrian (Amers\u00adfoort, Nether\u00adlands 1872 \u2013 1944 New York, USA) managed within a few years to break away from figura\u00adtive painting and develop a trend-setting abstract style which, in his extensive art-theore\u00adtical writings, he called \u201cNew Plastic\u201d or \u201cNeo-Plasti\u00adcism.\u201d Mondrian\u2019s osten\u00adsibly simple compo\u00adsi\u00adtions of initially black lines with colored rectan\u00adgles on a white, light blue, or gray ground did nothing less than revolu\u00adtio\u00adnize the artworld. And although his Neo-Plastic works were difficult for many to access, no other artistic position in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries has been cited, copied, varied, appro\u00adpriated, adapted, or satirized as often and in as many ways as Piet Mondrian\u2019s\u2014by fashion, adver\u00adti\u00adsing, archi\u00adtec\u00adture, design, and\u2014above all\u2014by art itself. With some 150 artworks and objects, the exhibi\u00adtion <em>Re-Inventing Piet. Mondrian and the Conse\u00adquences<\/em> provides insight into the multi\u00adfa\u00adceted explo\u00adra\u00adtion of Mondrian\u2019s Neo-Plastic main work. A selection of works by <strong>Piet Mondrian<\/strong> from the period 1913\u20131936 is on display in a central rotunda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The parti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adtory project \u201cBring your own Mondrian,\u201d in which all visitors are invited to bring \u201cMondri\u00adanalia\u201d from their own environ\u00adment, reveals already at the beginning of the exhibi\u00adtion the diversity of adapt\u00adations and the commer\u00adcial appro\u00adpria\u00adtion of \u201cthe Mondrian brand.\u201d As early as the 1960s, <strong>Yves Saint Laurent\u2019s <\/strong>famous cocktail dresses helped popula\u00adrize his work and influence many areas of life, bringing Mondrian\u2019s ideas to the public eye. With her work, <strong>Sylvie Fleury<\/strong> thema\u00adtizes the rise to luxury in the fashion industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous examples from the Dutch environ\u00adment of the De Stijl-Movement, to which Mondrian also belonged, pay testimony to the fact that, in the 1910s, fellow artists such as Bart van der Leck, <strong>Theo van Doesburg<\/strong>, and Gerrit Rietveld were also striving for new forms of design. In Paris, Mondrian later parti\u00adci\u00adpated in the Construc\u00adti\u00advist-oriented artist associa\u00adtions Cercle et Carr\u00e9, which also included <strong>Sophie Taeuber-Arp<\/strong>, Jean Gorin, and Kurt Schwit\u00adters, and Abstrac\u00adtion-Cr\u00e9ation, which included <strong>Marlow Moss<\/strong> and W\u0142adys\u0142aw Strze\u00admi\u0144ski. After emigra\u00adting to the United States in 1940, Mondrian met <strong>Lee Krasner<\/strong>, with whom he shared a prefe\u00adrence for jazz and the idea of rhythm in painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The subse\u00adquent reception of Mondrian\u2019s ground\u00adbrea\u00adking compo\u00adsi\u00adtions and his influence on later genera\u00adtions of artists is presented in the exhibi\u00adtion under various aspects. Works by Hal Busse, Mary Heilmann, Sarah Morris, and <strong>Fran\u00e7ois Morellet\/Tadashi Kawamata<\/strong>, for example, are situated in the field of tension between construc\u00adtion and decon\u00adstruc\u00adtion. Using different strate\u00adgies and within the framework of their own indivi\u00addual artistic expres\u00adsion, a number of artists deal with Mondrian in a construc\u00adtive, adaptive, or citational way. Examples of Mondrian adapt\u00adations from the field of archi\u00adtec\u00adture (by <strong>Yacoov Agam<\/strong>, among others) are presented via projec\u00adtions in one of the museum\u2019s east cabinets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chapter focusing on recon\u00adstruc\u00adtions offers a selection of works that either recreate concrete images by Mondrian in two or three dimen\u00adsions or are worked in Mondrian\u2019s style: In reference to Mondrian\u2019s last phase of work, <strong>Tom Sachs\u2019s<\/strong> picture consists entirely of adhesive tape, and Gregor Hildebrandt\u2019s precisely recon\u00adstructed \u201cMondrians\u201d are made of audio tapes in various colors. The \u201cplywood paintings\u201d by <strong>Mathieu Mercier<\/strong>, deliber\u00adately sloppy in both material and painterly execution, represent a deliber\u00adately ironic, subver\u00adsive confrontation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The title of Dennis Oppenheim\u2019s sculpture is also subver\u00adsi\u00advely provo\u00adca\u00adtive, sugges\u00adting that it is an \u201cexploded Mondrian.\u201d From a formal as well as cultural distance, <strong>Remy Jungerman<\/strong> engages with Mondrian by combining his modernist aesthetic with references to Maroon culture and with West African elements, while at the same time questio\u00adning the Western canon of art. In a radical icono\u00adclastic gesture, <strong>Iv\u00e1n Argote<\/strong> takes action in his short video when he seeminly covers two famous paintings at the Centre Pompidou in Paris with spray paint, thus questio\u00adning the value of&nbsp;art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the aspect of reflec\u00adtion and reception, Joseph Kosuth approa\u00adches Mondrian\u2019s paintings on a concep\u00adtual level by quoting various state\u00adments from Mondrian\u2019s writings within a typical Neo-Plastic mesh of lines. Claudia Angel\u00admeier and <strong>Melissa Gordon<\/strong> also delve deeply into the history of reception by referring to the secondary litera\u00adture on Mondrian. <strong>J\u00f6rg Sasse\u2019s<\/strong> photo\u00adgraphy traces the migration of Mondrian borro\u00adwings in the design of everyday objects of the postwar period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The success story of Piet Mondrian\u2019s Neo-Plastic art lies mainly in the osten\u00adsibly simple and at the same time easily recogniz\u00adable combi\u00adna\u00adtion of rectan\u00adgular design struc\u00adtures and the limita\u00adtion to the three primary colors red, yellow, and blue. In terms of cognitive psycho\u00adlogy, it seems to be suffi\u00adcient to see Mondria\u00adnesque \u201cpictures\u201d in certain constel\u00adla\u00adtions of color and form, as can be seen, for example, in the works of John Bodin, <strong>Philippe Calia<\/strong>, and Saul Leiter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibi\u00adtion <em>Re-Inventing Piet. Mondrian and the Conse\u00adquences<\/em> is accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by a compre\u00adhen\u00adsive and richly illus\u00adtrated publi\u00adca\u00adtion (approx. 300 pages, 300 illus\u00adtra\u00adtions), edited by Andreas Beitin and Ren\u00e9 Zechlin and published by Verlag der Buchhand\u00adlung Walther K\u00f6nig, Cologne. The German\/English edition, designed by the Berlin-based Studio S\/M\/L, includes an intro\u00adduc\u00adtion by Andreas Beitin and text contri\u00adbu\u00adtions by Friedrich von Borries, Nancy J. Troy, Wolfgang Ullrich, and Marek Wieczorek.
