(13.10.2023 \u2013 7.1.2024) Kunst\u00admu\u00adseum Wolfsburg, Foto: Marek Kruszweski<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-1 wp-block-group alignfull has-gray-background-color has-background\">\n<h2>Infos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>It is an impres\u00adsive collec\u00adtion of some 5,000 photo\u00adgraphs and more than 70,000 negatives\u2014a total of almost 2,000 kilograms of material\u2014that Sergiy Lebedy\u00adn\u00adskyy, Director of the Museum of the Kharkiv School of Photo\u00adgraphy (MOKSOP), had trans\u00adported to Wolfsburg a few weeks after the beginning of the Russian war of aggres\u00adsion. The works belong to the so-called Kharkiv School of Photo\u00adgraphy, a movement that has been experi\u00admen\u00adting artis\u00adti\u00adcally since the late 1960s and repres\u00adents a kind of anti-attitude to official Soviet-style photo\u00adgraphy. The works were supposed to be exhibited in the Museum of the Kharkiv School of Photo\u00adgraphy (MOKSOP) in Kharkiv, which was newly founded by Lebedynskyy\u2014but then Russia\u2019s war of aggres\u00adsion, in violation of inter\u00adna\u00adtional law, began in February 2022. The photo\u00adgraphs found their way out of the war zone in otherwise empty humani\u00adta\u00adrian aid transport trucks and eventually ended up in Lebedynskyy\u2019s basement in Wolfsburg, where he has lived and worked for several years. The Kunst\u00admu\u00adseum Wolfsburg has tempora\u00adrily stored this collec\u00adtion in its art depot. Now, from October 13, 2023 to January 7, 2024, part of this important collec\u00adtion will be on display in the exhibi\u00adtion <em>Ukrainian Dreamers. The Kharkiv School of Photo\u00adgraphy<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>The Kharkiv School of Photo\u00adgraphy has already experi\u00adenced several upheavals that have shaken Ukrainian society: from the \u201cambiguous\u201d stability of the Brezhnev era to the rapid libera\u00adtion brought about by perestroika, the subse\u00adquent collapse of the USSR and the country\u2019s regained indepen\u00addence, the economic crisis and turmoil of the 1990s, two revolu\u00adtions, and the neo-imperia\u00adlist war of aggres\u00adsion under Putin. All of these periods challenged many Ukrainian artists in different ways, making the school a fluid network that ultimately responded to the changes in its environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Placed in a state of political and social limbo, the artists lived through this with an urge to experi\u00adment photo\u00adgra\u00adphi\u00adcally. Isolated from all profes\u00adsional insti\u00adtu\u00adtions and the market during the Soviet period and with little access to them even after Ukraine\u2019s indepen\u00addence, they mostly engaged in artistic activi\u00adties in their free time, for example in amateur photo\u00adgraphy clubs. The artists either took refuge in the construc\u00adtion of subjec\u00adtive worlds or coura\u00adge\u00adously expressed their views on social and political issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to examining the history of noncon\u00adfor\u00admism in Ukrainian art, Kharkiv, which is also consi\u00addered an important educa\u00adtional and indus\u00adtrial center, is repre\u00adsented primarily by the Kharkiv School of Photo\u00adgraphy. One of the reasons for the few noncon\u00adfor\u00admist artists was the parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly strict control exercised over the artistic community by the local branch of the State Union of Artists and the penal autho\u00adri\u00adties. However, several small groups of photographers\u2014altogether some forty artists from four genera\u00adtions can be counted today\u2014ventured out at different times and created works that had little to do with Soviet direc\u00adtives. Thus, in addition to the experi\u00admental, such as overlays of slides or \u201efalse colors\u201c achieved through poste\u00adriz\u00ada\u00adtion, there is also casual natural nudity\u2014quickly condemned as porno\u00adgraphy in the Soviet era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the first genera\u00adtion around Boris Mikhailov and Evgeniy Pavlov to the groups SOSka and Shilo and current works by Bella Logachova and the tandem Andriy Rachin\u00adskiy and Daniil Revkovskiy, the exhibi\u00adtion, developed in coope\u00adra\u00adtion with the Museum of the Kharkiv School of Photo\u00adgraphy, provides insights into the artistic approa\u00adches of the pheno\u00admenon of the Kharkiv School of Photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>The Museum of the Kharkiv School of Photography<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The MOKSOP (Museum of the Kharkiv School of Photo\u00adgraphy) is the first Ukrainian museum of contem\u00adporary photo\u00adgraphy. It was founded in 2018 by the photo\u00adgraphers Sergiy Lebedy\u00adn\u00adskyy and Vladyslav Krasno\u00adsh\u00adchok, together with the art histo\u00adrians Oleksandra Osadcha and Nadiia Bernard-Kovalchuk. The name of the museum is inspired by the movement of the same name in Ukrainian art history: the Kharkiv School of Photo\u00adgraphy. It gained inter\u00adna\u00adtional recogni\u00adtion mainly through Boris Mikhailov, one of the most influ\u00aden\u00adtial contem\u00adporary artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MOKSOP has amassed a signi\u00adfi\u00adcant core collec\u00adtion of Ukrainian photo\u00adgraphy since the 1960s: Today, the museum\u2019s collec\u00adtion includes more than 5,000 prints and some 70,000 film negatives of classic documen\u00adtary and art projects, as well as the work of young photo\u00adgraphers. With the aim of making the country\u2019s photo\u00adgra\u00adphic heritage more widely known, the MOKSOP\u2019s curato\u00adrial group runs a nomadic exhibi\u00adtion program and organizes solo and
