How do others see me? Who do I want to be?\u201d Especially during puberty, the question of one\u2019s own identity gains in impor\u00adt\u00adance. For the first time, the Kunst\u00admu\u00adseum Wolfsburg is enabling young people to conceive their own exhibi\u00adtion on this theme. The museum\u2019s curato\u00adrial and research assistants have developed an exhibi\u00adtion program together with young people between the ages of fourteen and seventeen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>During puberty, the trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion of one\u2019s own body and the awakening of sexuality, as well as emerging social tasks and attri\u00adbu\u00adtions, make young people aware for the first time of the different concepts of identi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion offered by the real and digital environ\u00adments. These existen\u00adtial questions are also negotiated in contem\u00adporary art: In an interplay of reception, self-repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion, and self-staging, artists discuss various forms of the repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion of identity, reflec\u00adting social roles and stereo\u00adty\u00adpical identity patterns. In addition to dealing criti\u00adcally with the theme of identity, the young people were taught profes\u00adsional and metho\u00addo\u00adlo\u00adgical skills and encou\u00adraged to develop an enthu\u00adsiasm for contem\u00adporary art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a preselec\u00adtion of 200 works of art, the young people, together with the curato\u00adrial and research assistants, selected artistic positions according to their own thematic emphases and approa\u00adched the concept of identity through mutual exchange. In doing so, aspects of sexual self-deter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion, ideals of beauty, self-staging, delimi\u00adta\u00adtion, crises and conflicts crystal\u00adlized as parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly relevant for the young people. The exhibits highlight these themes in an exemplary manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whereas, in the 1970s, feminist artists such as Ulrike Rosenbach staged themselves in male poses in their art to draw attention to gender-specific discri\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion, young net artists such as Signe Pierce use Instagram and other digital platforms to create a media-based alter ego through various forms of self-staging and to present this for discus\u00adsion in real time to a digital public outside the protected space of the museum. With her in some cases strongly sexua\u00adlized images, the artist demons\u00adtrates that her own body repeatedly becomes a central conflict zone and site of social confrontation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his long-term photo\u00adgra\u00adphic series, the artist Harry Hachmeister also plays with stereo\u00adty\u00adpical gender roles, documen\u00adting his search for his own sexual identity. Richard Billingham takes up the theme of social localiz\u00ada\u00adtion by shedding light on the preca\u00adrious social milieu of his own family. The artist Cao Fei examines the extent to which our personal dreams and interests can be recon\u00adciled with indus\u00adtria\u00adlized working and living environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The artists Sylvie Fleury and Daniele Buetti also criticize a society driven by capita\u00adlism. While Fleury\u2019s shopping bags filled with luxury items reflect the widespread voracity for name-brand products, through which we attempt to ennoble ourselves, Buetti\u2014in an act of violence\u2014carves trade\u00admarks as scars into the otherwise flawless faces of the models in his photo\u00adgraphs. M\u00e1rio Macilau\u2019s photo\u00adgraphs, in which young people from Mozam\u00adbique stage themselves in outfits that combine both tradi\u00adtional elements of southern African fashion and European concepts of style, demons\u00adtrate that fashion is not only part of consumer culture, but also a pop cultural means of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The parti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adtory exhibi\u00adtion project will be accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by a paperback publi\u00adca\u00adtion contai\u00adning illus\u00adtra\u00adtions of the exhibited works as well as documen\u00adta\u00adtion of the project.
