With <em>True Pictures? LaToya Ruby Frazier<\/em>, the Kunst\u00admu\u00adseum Wolfsburg is presen\u00adting the first solo exhibi\u00adtion of the multiple award-winning artist in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LaToya Ruby Frazier is currently one of the most important young photo\u00adgraphers in North America. In and with her work, she takes sides with the working class of the United States, which is forced to live in at times preca\u00adrious condi\u00adtions due to, among other things, unemploy\u00adment, drinking water conta\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion, or the degra\u00addation of indus\u00adtrial cities. In the spirit of the film director and photo\u00adgra\u00adpher Gordon Parks, LaToya Ruby Frazier incre\u00ada\u00adsingly uses her camera as a weapon against injustice, intole\u00adrance, and poverty. She succeeds in portraying socially relevant issues in a parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly empathetic way, often staging them on the basis of biogra\u00adphical contexts: For example, her own family and friends are repeatedly the subject of her photo\u00adgraphs. The range of her motifs within the various series therefore extends from intimate glimpses of family life and genre scenes to landscape images that can almost be described as classical\u2014if it weren\u2019t for the knowledge of the often economic and ecolo\u00adgical disasters associated with the areas photographed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the exhibi\u00adtion <em>True Pictures? LaToya Ruby Frazier<\/em>, the Kunst\u00admu\u00adseum Wolfsburg is part of the coope\u00adra\u00adtion project <em>True Pictures? Contem\u00adporary Photo\u00adgraphy from Canada and the USA<\/em>, a survey show of twentieth and twenty-first-century photo\u00adgraphy initiated by the Sprengel Museum Hannover.
